FAQs:

6-Foot vs. 8-Foot Barrel Sauna: Which Is Right for You?

If you’re shopping for a barrel sauna, one of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to go with a 6-foot or 8-foot diameter.

But here’s the thing: diameter isn’t the whole story.

At Solstice Saunas, we build our barrel saunas in a variety of lengths, so a 6-foot diameter sauna can be anything from a compact, intimate sauna for two to a long, spacious sauna capable of hosting a large group.

The real question isn’t simply:

“How many people will fit?”

It’s:

“How do you want your sauna to feel?”

6-Foot vs. 8-Foot: What's the Difference?

The biggest difference between the two diameters is the experience inside the sauna.

A 6-foot barrel has a more traditional, cozy barrel-sauna feel. The curved walls bring the space in around you and create an intimate environment that many people love.

An 8-foot barrel opens the interior up considerably. You’ll have more headroom, more interior volume, and more freedom when designing your benches and interior layout.

Neither is better.

They’re simply different experiences.

The 6-Foot Barrel

Cozy. Efficient. Flexible.

Our 6-foot diameter barrels are a great choice for anyone who wants the classic barrel sauna experience without needing an oversized structure.

The smaller diameter creates a cozy atmosphere that is especially well suited to couples, families, and anyone who enjoys a more intimate sauna environment.

But don’t mistake “6-foot diameter” for “small.”

Because we can build these saunas in a variety of lengths, a 6-foot barrel can be designed with substantial bench space and room for a surprisingly large group.

A 6-foot sauna might be:

6′ × 8′

A compact and intimate sauna that’s perfect for a couple or smaller family.

Or it could be:

6′ × 12′

Giving you considerably more bench space and room for additional people.

Or even:

6′ × 16′

Now you’re talking about a substantial sauna with plenty of room for a larger group—while still maintaining the distinctive feel of a 6-foot barrel.

Why Choose a 6-Foot Barrel?

– You like a cozy, traditional sauna experience
– You want a more compact diameter
– You want flexibility in overall length
– You want to customize the amount of bench space
– You prefer a more intimate environment
– You don’t necessarily need the additional headroom of an 8-foot barrel
– You want to maximize the sauna experience without maximizing the diameter

–––

The 8-Foot Barrel

Spacious. Open. Luxurious.

The 8-foot diameter takes the barrel sauna experience in a different direction.

The additional diameter creates substantially more interior volume and gives the sauna a more open feeling.

You’ll have more room above and around you, more flexibility with bench placement, and a greater sense of space throughout the interior.

For some people, that’s exactly what they’re looking for.

An 8-foot barrel is particularly appealing if you want your sauna to feel like a dedicated luxury space rather than a compact traditional sauna.

For example:

8′ × 10′

Provides a spacious interior while remaining relatively compact in overall length.

And increasing the length gives you even more room for larger groups and more elaborate interior layouts.

Why Choose an 8-Foot Barrel?

– You want a more open interior
– You prefer additional headroom
– You want more interior volume
– You want larger or more elaborate bench arrangements
– You regularly sauna with family or friends
– You want a more spacious, luxurious feeling
– You have the space for a larger diameter

–––

Don’t Forget About Length

This is one of the most important things to understand when comparing barrel sauna sizes.

Diameter and length do different things.

Diameter primarily affects the shape, headroom, and overall feeling of the interior.

Length determines how much usable space you have along the length of the sauna.

That’s why we don’t recommend choosing a sauna based solely on its diameter.

A 6-foot diameter × 16-foot-long sauna is a very different experience from a 6-foot diameter × 8-foot-long sauna.

Likewise, an 8-foot × 10-foot sauna has a very different feel than an 8-foot × 20-foot sauna.

This flexibility is one of the advantages of having your sauna handcrafted by Solstice.

Instead of forcing you into a handful of predetermined sizes, we can build the length around how you actually intend to use the sauna.

Which Sauna Is More Luxurious?

This really comes down to what you mean by luxury.

If luxury means space, headroom, and an open interior, the 8-foot diameter has the advantage.

If luxury means a cozy, immersive sauna experience designed exactly around how you use it, a 6-foot barrel can be every bit as impressive.

A beautifully designed 6-foot × 12-foot or 6-foot × 16-foot sauna isn’t a lesser version of an 8-foot sauna.

It’s simply a different design.

And for many people, that classic barrel shape and cozy atmosphere are exactly what makes the experience special.

Which Size Should You Choose?

There’s no universal right answer.

Choose a 6-foot diameter if you want:

A classic, cozy barrel sauna experience with the flexibility to customize the length to fit your needs.

This is an excellent option if you love the traditional barrel design, want a more intimate atmosphere, or want to maximize usable space without increasing the diameter.

Choose an 8-foot diameter if you want:

A more spacious, open sauna with additional headroom and a luxurious interior feel.

It’s a great choice if you have the room for a larger structure and want the sauna to feel more like a dedicated spa environment.

Still Not Sure?

That’s where we come in.

Tell us:

– How many people will typically use the sauna
– How much space you have available
– Whether you prefer a cozy or spacious interior
– Whether you want to sit or stretch out
– Whether you’re considering wood-fired or electric heat
– Where you’re planning to put the sauna

We’ll help you determine the diameter and length that make the most sense for you.

Because when you’re investing in a sauna, you shouldn’t have to choose a size just because it’s the closest option on a dropdown menu.

We’ll build it around the experience you want.

Built in Alaska. Built Around You.

Every Solstice barrel sauna is handcrafted in Wasilla, Alaska and built to be more than just a structure in your backyard.

Whether you choose the cozy character of a 6-foot barrel or the open luxury of an 8-foot barrel, we’ll help you create a sauna that’s right for the way you want to use it.
